Michael Morse, author of the Paladin book Rescuing Providence, was recently named one of three recipients of the prestigious MacColl Johnson Fellowship from The Rhode Island Foundation. One of the largest no-strings-attached awards available to writers in the United States, the fellowship is awarded each year to Rhode Island composers, writers, and visual artists. Each recipient receives $25,000, which enables the artist to concentrate time on the creative process, focus on personal or professional development, expand his or her body of work, and explore new directions. Michael Morse has worked as a firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Providence, Rhode Island, Fire Department for more than 20 years. Rescuing Providence takes you along for 34 nonstop hours as Morse and his fellow EMTs respond to drug overdoses, heart attacks, car accidents, gunshot wounds, suicides, alcoholics, premature births, broken bones and other medical emergencies that are all in a day’s work for them. This touching, humorous, life-affirming memoir offers intriguing insight into the human condition and the best and worst of our 911 and health-care systems.
